1. Description
In this painting, a young woman and her child are bringing lanterns and other supplies for the Chinese Spring Festival. In China, this festival usually occurs in early February, but varies because it is based on a lunar calendar. The weather is still very cold, as you can see from the snowy background of this painting. But when this young lady arrives to sell her goods in the small town, it brings a feeling that the Spring is coming, and there will soon be relief from the bitter cold. Each year, people from smaller villages, like the woman in this painting, travel to larger villages or small towns to celebrate together at a kind of “Spring Festival Fair”. While the celebration is centered around the Spring Festival time, the other part of the fair serves as a marketplace for people to buy, sell, and trade goods. There is no doubt that this woman hopes to make a tidy profit on her hand-made lanterns, and in turn, buy or trade for some items that she needs back in her own village. 2. Details
