1. Description

Gong 觥 - an always animal shaped vessel type from late Shang, out of the Middle Yangtse area. The cover of this wine mug is stretched over the whole length of the vessel. If the rim line is curved the type is called aogong 凹觥, “concave gong”. The character originally means a kind of volume measure.

盛酒器，西周昭王。扶风庄白出土。腹长方外鼓，前有流，后有把，劲微收，长方圈足，通体饰扉棱。盖前呈羊首形，高鼻目，两卤外露，两巨角曲而下垂，全身饰有数十种动物图案，纹饰繁缛，分布匀称。是件珍贵的艺术珍品。
